We cut to a shot of Mark Sanction and J. Pain sitting at the broadcast area. After a moment or two, Sanction stares at us directly and begins to speak.
Mark Sanction: Well, as you all are aware; Alex Sean will be making his... to some, long awaited return to the XWA.
J. Pain: Who are these people waiting for Alex Sean's return, again?
Mark Sanction: ... Hrm.
Awkward pause.
Mark Sanction: ... Anyway, regardless of all that, we sought to get ahold of Sean prior to his match tonight against the New Legion's owner Jack Sabbath.
J. Pain: Why?
Mark Sanction: ... Could you just let me get through this, please?
Pain shrugs then raises his arms as if to say "go on".
Mark Sanction: Unfortunately... Sean refused to speak to anyone prior to his match. However, to accomodate us... Rolls eyes. ... Alex Sean has sent in his own video where he sat down with former XWA Play-By-Play announcer and independent documentarian Matthew Werner. Roll it, guys.
With this we are brought to a video of Matthew Werner sitting in a leather sofa. After a few moments, Werner stares off to his left and speaks.
Matthew Werner: So... We gonna start this thing or what?
From what seems like a relatively far distance, we hear a response.
"Yeah, whenever you're ready, Matt."
Werner pauses for a moment, looking around at his surroundings.
Matthew Werner: Don't you think this would be better... you know... if I were a little closer maybe?
With that we pan to our right to notice close to ten feet between Matthew Werner and the desk in which Alex Sean sits behind.
Alex Sean: I just thought you'd be more comfortable, is all.
Matthew Werner: Well I just thi...
Alex Sean: It is a very comfortable sofa. You have to admit that.
Matthew Werner: ... Yes, it's very comfortable but fo...
Alex Sean: Two G's on that one, Matthew. Two thousand dollars but the thread count is unbelievable.
Matthew Werner: Thread count?
Alex Sean: Yeah, don't you know about the thread count?
Matthew Werner: No Alex, not really.
Alex Sean: Oh...
Sean ponders to himself for a moment.
Alex Sean: To tell you the truth I'm not entirely sure but I think it means it's more comfortable.
Matthew Werner: I see.
Alex Sean: Yup.
Awkward pause commence.
Matthew Werner: So we should probably...
Alex Sean: Yeah, yeah... go ahead.
Matthew Werner: Ahem So, um, obviously a lot of people are talking about your return to the XWA. More specifically...
Alex Sean: Hey this is really interesting but I have something on my mind right now.
Werner sighs heavily, then speaks.
Matthew Werner: And that would be?
Alex Sean: Have you seen this new web-site? XWA got a dot com, they're moving up in the world apparently.
Chuckling to himself, Sean continues.
Alex Sean: But getting serious, this web-site is an insult. An insult Matthew!
Matthew Werner: How so?
Alex Sean: Well first of all, I'm not even in the top ten. I'm Alex Sean. I should be in every top ten.
Matthew Werner: I see.
Alex Sean: Not to mention I don't even have a profile page. So what? Raine's more important than Alex Sean? Give me a break. They don't list me as champion...
Matthew Werner: But you're not a champion.
Sean freezes up, staring coldly at Werner.
Alex Sean: I'm not a champion?
Matthew Werner: ... Not in the XW...
Sean reaches behind his desk and pulls out his WFWF World Heavyweight Championship, apparently being displayed on some sort of padded, velvet surfaced stand. Raising the title above his head, Sean raises his voice.
Alex Sean: What does this say?
Matthew Werner: I was just sa...
Alex Sean: What does this belt say, Matthew?
Matthew Werner: Sigh That you are the WFWF Champion.
Alex Sean: That's right. Imitating mockingly not a world champion... Aren't you supposed to be a journalist? Do your homework.
Perhaps feeling insulted, Matthew Werner snaps back.
Matthew Werner: Well hell, Alex, why didn't you just let Sven Michaels or someone do the interview if I'm doing such a bad job?
Alex Sean: I don't think Sven Michaels works there anymore.
Matthew Werner: They still got Holly Hunt, right?
Alex Sean: Oh... Yeah, they do.
Matthew Werner: Well why no...
Alex Sean: Yeah, you're right. She would have been a lot better than you.
Werner pauses, staring angrily at Alex Sean.
Alex Sean: But it's alright, I'll just let you do it for today.
Matthew Werner: Speaking sarcastically Why thank you Alex, thank you so much for this opportunity.
Clearly not catching or caring at all about the sarcasm...
Alex Sean: No problem Matthew, I know this was your dream.
At this point, Werner is rubbing the tendon between his eyes.
Matthew Werner: Maybe we should talk about your match?
Alex Sean: Sure that's incredibly interesting but first you know what else I hate about this web-site?
Matthew Werner: ... Wha...
Alex Sean: What's with the message board? I try to sign up and they won't send my Hotmail account an activation code? Who the f*ck uses Yahoo anyway?
Matthew Werner: Why don't you just get your own dot com address?
Alex Sean: What kind of person pays for a dot com?
Matthew Werner: Probably someone with a lot of disposable income.
It's only until now that we notice the drinking bird on Sean's desk, the stack of infomercial product boxes in the corner of the room, and the prominently displayed poster of Muhammad Ali standing above a fallen Sonny Liston.
Werner peers up at the poster as well, triggering a response from Alex Sean.
Alex Sean: Oh, that. That's kind of like my power animal or something.
Matthew Werner: Of course. ... So about your match.
Alex Sean: Yes.
Matthew Werner: I guess what are your thoughts on your match this week and Jack Sabbath in general?
Sean stares at Werner blankly.
Alex Sean: You want my thoughts on my match this week? My thoughts on Jack Sabbath? I dunno Matthew, not a whole lot to be perfectly honest.
Somewhat confused by the answer...
Matthew Werner: What do you mean "not a whole lot"?
Alex Sean: You asked what I thought of Jack Sabbath. Not a whole lot. I don't think a lot of Jack Sabbath.
Matthew Werner: I see.
Alex Sean: I mean let's be honest here for a second. He's what? Five and five?
Matthew Werner: Something like that.
Alex Sean: I haven't lost once in four years, do I really need to worry about a guy with a 50% success rate?
Matthew Werner: He's been making waves in the XWA with The Legion.
Alex Sean: Man, f*ck The Legion. These guys go around talking about "we are one", and yet they can't seem to hang on to a member for more than three weeks. Take it from someone who's had a little bit of experience running crews; When the people who are supposed to be backing you up all bail within a three month period, it means that you've assembled a collection of single-minded, selfish, individually driven people. What that doesn't mean is that you are somehow united as one.
Sean pauses for a moment.
Alex Sean: Look at Vestal. You think he cares about Jack Sabbath's agenda, about Jack Sabbath's goals? No. Vestal cares about Vestal and he's doing what he thinks is in Vestal, not Jack Sabbath and certainly not The Legion's best interests.
Matthew Werner: I see.
Alex Sean: I mean for christ's sake, the man has to beat up his girlfriend just to keep her around. Where I grew up those sorts of people weren't called leaders, weren't called visionaries, weren't called masterminds, they were called cowards. And Jack Sabbath is a coward. He hides behind his Merry Men and beats up on his woman because he can't get the job done in the ring.
Matthew Werner: He has some pretty legitimate wins.
Alex Sean: By who's standards, Matthew? Tempest is washed up, everyone knows that. So he's got, what? Calvin Lee? Look you know I love Calvin, and I hope one day he gets his sh*t together and reaches his full potential. But you think Calvin gives two sh*ts about whether he beats Jack Sabbath or not? Look, I've been there. I lost to CBT once. Not because CBT was better, but because what does it matter if CBT beats me? You think in ten years people are going to say "Alex Sean was one of the best of all time but he couldn't beat CBT?"
After waiting the obligatory small window of time for a rhetorical question, Sean continues.
Alex Sean: Of course not. I'm a legend. I'm the best of all time. At the end of the day, the CBT's of the world, the Jack Sabbath's of the world fade away. So, you know, you're Calvin Lee. If you're gonna be around another five years at this level, why even bother with Jack Sabbath when clearly he isn't going to be?
Matthew Werner: You don't think he has what it takes to succeed?
Sean pauses for a moment, pondering the question.
Alex Sean: I dunno Matthew, I'm not a psychic. But if everything that he's shown is everything that he has, then no. He has no future and you want to know why?
Matthew Werner: Why's that?
Alex Sean: Because he has no heart. Sean places his fist on his chest emphasizing the point. There are no shortcuts in this business. In order to succeed you have to struggle, you have to fight, you have to claw, you have to fail, and you have to die trying before you can ever truly succeed. If you really want to make it in this business you have to be willing to give up everything. I gave this business my marriage, my health, my sanity, and my body to get where I am today. Jack Sabbath is a quitter. He quit before he ever even started. He comes in and he assembles his group and plays the numbers game. You ever look at his official record? He has it written as "Lost to Rose in a close match". What the hell is that? You don't see him writing "Beat Calvin by having a bunch of my cronies run in and cheat". He's a Stan, a fake, a phony. He doesn't have what it takes to be a player and he knows it. So he takes shortcuts. He cheats and he manipulates the game because he can't win otherwise. He beats up his girlfriend and he talks sh*t without backing it up. Jack Sabbath is no mastermind, he's just a b*tch.
As Sean finishes his tirade, Werner pauses, a little overwhelmed by it.
Matthew Werner: So then what do you expect?
Alex Sean: Well, you know, I expect him to do everything I said he does. He'll drag his girl by the arm to ringside, he'll get in there, I'll outwrestle him, and he'll try to have one of his boys clip my leg or distract the refereee or whatever. That's what I expect to happen.
Matthew Werner: And what then?
Alex Sean: Pardon?
Matthew Werner: Saying he does all of that, what then?
Alex Sean: I win. Look, regardless of what tricks Sabbath has up his sleeve, there ain't no way he's got what it takes to outsmart or outwork me. I'm not saying it'll be easy, but at the end of the day I'll do what I always do and that's make it happen. Because that's what champions do, Matthew, they make it happen.
Matthew Werner: With that, do you have any last words, maybe a message you want to give to Jack Sabbath?
Sean looks down, pondering, then responds.
Alex Sean: If I can say anything to Jack Sabbath, it's that... I just want him to know he has a choice. I mean he's gonna lose. At the end of the day, whether he goes out there and tries to play mind games or goes out there and throws Capoeira kicks, he's not going to win. So he can go out there and play the numbers game, tilt the table, improve his odds, and lose like the coward he's shown himself to be, or he can go out there and try to go toe-to-toe with the greatest of all time and lose like a man. And you know Matthew?
Matthew Werner: What?
Alex Sean: There's nothing to be ashamed of in getting bested by the best. Just ask Trace Demon.
With that, Werner turns toward us.
Matthew Werner: Well, with that, I'm Matthew Werner. Back to ringside.
Following these words we return to the broadcast area where Mark Sanction and J. Pain stand by.
Mark Sanction: Strong words from the WFWF Champion.
J. Pain: I'll give him that, the man can cut a promo.
